I don't put sugar in my coffee, only cream. But if you put both then, please, put the sugar in first. I just don't think it's right to put sugar into a coffee after pouring in cream or milk. That's all I have to say. :)
OK, so let's say it takes roughly 5 seconds for sugar to dissolve if you put it in before you add the milk/creme(r). Let's say it takes double... or even TRIPLE that amount of time after you put in the sugar, so 15 seconds. By the time I pour the milk, coffee and sugar (in whatever order) into my cup, stir it all up, bring it back to my seat and take my first sip a full minute has easily slipped by. So what does it matter if it takes me 5 seconds or 15 seconds, or even 60 seconds before my coffee is ready? I'm not! :)

Why should I change my coffee habits just because you "just don't think it's right"? You'll have to do better than that to convince me!

sugar dissolves better when the coffee is still hot. cream or milk cools down the coffee, hence sugar should go in first.
it's not rocket science! ;)

what if the cream or milk cools the coffee down to a point that the sugar doesn't melt?

Then you put too much milk/creme(r) in your coffee and you deserve what you get!!! :) For those people, your recommendation holds.
On a related note, you also recommend putting the milk in before pouring the coffee... so what happens when you use both milk AND sugar?
